  Dear judges,

  I’m the candidate/contestant No. 3. The title of my topic is What Can You Do?

  It’s my great honor to show my lesson here. In order to make my presentation much more distinct, I’d like to describe my thoughts in the following six aspects: analysis of teaching material, students, teaching methods, learning methods, teaching procedures and blackboard design. I hope I can make a good performance today. Now, I will present my thoughts one by one.

  1. Analysis of teaching material

  Today’s lesson is from section A of Unit 4, Book 5 for primary school, PEP. Its main theme is telling about housework and leading students to talk about what kind of housework they can do. Generally speaking, English classes in grade five get closer with students’ real life. Therefore, the topics of this grade become much more practical, which embody the instrumental feature of English.

  Based on the new curriculum standard, I set up three teaching aims as follows. The knowledge aims are to remember the new phrases relating to housework (such as sweep the floor, clean the bedroom, cook the meals and empty the trash, etc.) and grasp the new sentence patterns like “What can … do? … can… ” . The ability aims are to guess the meaning of new phrases by reading the words around them, and enhance students’ oral English communication abilities. The emotional aims are to arouse students’ English learning interest and foster their habits of doing housework.

  Next, please allow me to introduce key points and difficult points of the lesson. The key points are to master the new phrases and the new sentence patterns, while the difficult points are to remember the new phrases, understand what they mean and enable students to use the new sentences in daily life.

  2. Analysis of students

  For the sake of achieving the above teaching objectives, I’d like to analyze the current level of students. Students in grade five have strong interest and curiosity in English study. What’s more, most of them have a definite learning motivation and can cooperate with each other. However, their abstract thinking ability is not mature enough, and it’s still hard for them to use the new sentences correctly in daily life. So I must pay more attention to those who have difficulty in English study.

  3. Analysis of teaching methods

  Considering the new curriculum standard and students’ characteristics, I will mainly adopt task-based language teaching method, situational approach, and design plenty of activities to make students learn to play and play to learn, which may facilitate their understanding.

  4. Analysis of learning methods

  As for the learning methods, students are encouraged to participate in activities like guessing game, role-play, pair work and group work, which contribute to stimulating their learning enthusiasm.

  5. Analysis of teaching procedures

  According to the above analysis, I design the teaching procedures which include six steps as follows.

  Step 1 Lead-in/Warming up

  To warm up, I’ll show students a short video about housework, then ask them “how many kinds of housework are there in the video?” This step is designed to arouse students’ learning interest.

  Step 2 Presentation

  Firstly, I will show some pictures of housework, and ask them to tell about what kind of housework is in the picture. After that, students will be guided to spell and read the new phrases (sweep the floor, clean the bedroom, cook the meals and empty the trash) several times. Secondly, I will organize students to play a guessing game. After I flash a phrase card, students should answer me what the phrase is and find out the missing word of this phrase. Thirdly, listen to the radio, think about the questions “What can Chen do” and “What can the animals do”, lead students to use the sentence pattern like “Chen/They can…”to answer me. The purpose of this step is to help students master the new phrases and the new sentence patterns.

  Step 3 Practice

  Since I do believe that “the more you practice, the greater progress you will make”, I’d like to ask students to read the dialogues of section A in pairs and groups.

  Step 4 Production

  In this step, students should accomplish a task of role-play with their partners. One plays as teacher, the other plays as Chen. Or they can make up a dialogue with the new sentence patterns like “What can ...do? ...can… ”. After practice, I will ask some students to show their performances on the platform.

  Step 5 Summary

  To summarize the lesson, I will guide students to review the phrases and sentences by reading them again, which can help them consolidate the key knowledge.

  Step 6 Homework

  Students are supposed to make up a new dialogue with their partners using the new phrases and sentences, which will also help them review what they learnt.
